Many say that the library is a storehouse or a source of knowledge. It was absolutely true as library stores many references from all disciplines. If someone needs references or information, a library is a best way to be visited to look for information.

Eventhough library is widely known only as a place for keeping of books, journals, and other printed reference sources actually it serve all the informations in the library can be accessed and used freely by public.

In its progress, a library is not only contains scientific references and other printed sources but it used to keep society work art, to record cultures and other usefull things. On the other word, a library not only serve the information in the form of printed but in digital form to help society reach the library easyly.

The existence of the library is very useful and gave a lot of functions for society. According to Sulistyo-Basuki (1991), there are 5 functions of library, namely:

Work Art

A Library function as a place to keep the work art created by the society. Usually, it form of printed works and other recorded works.

Information

A library must be able to serve all the informations needed by society completely every time they come to a library. A library should give appropriate information too. Society also could provide information to a library and shared it to other communities.

Education

The library’s existence is in harmony with educational goals and very useful to support the learning process as library provides learning resources and learning materials.

Recreation

A library should be able to present fun and entertaining information for users. So, they will feel comfortable when they are looking for the information.

Cultural

A Library function as a media to preserve the existing culture in society and as a place to develop the culture itself. Then, the information itself used to add value in social cultural.

According to Suwarno (2011: 27), those functions of the library above changing without skip  its old function. They are:

Due to those vital functions, the existance of a library is a must. Nothing can’t replace a library eventhough we have internet as other source of information nowdays.
